Statement by the Hong Kong Coalition on the “Decision of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on Issues Concerning the Qualification of members of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region”
The Hong Kong Coalition supports the National People’s Congress Standing Committee’s adoption of the “Decision of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on the Qualification of members of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.”
The Coalition believes that the Legislative Council is an essential component of Hong Kong’s political structure. As a public official, Legislative Councillors must take a sincere and solemn oath to support The Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and pledge allegiance to the HKSAR of the PRC. Each lawmaker should possess such a political disposition and moral threshold. Should they violate their oaths, they must lose their LegCo seat according to the law.
This decision by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee is reasonable, legal, in line with the expectations of the Hong Kong people, and based on the foundation of solid public opinion.
The Coalition urges Legislative Councillors to prioritise the interests of Hong Kong and the Nation, never promote or support claims of “Hong Kong independence,” nor refuse to recognise the state’s right to exercise sovereignty over Hong Kong. They must never seek foreign assistance to intervene in the affairs of the HKSAR nor undertake acts that endanger national security. Such actions are resolutely opposed and not tolerated by Hong Kong’s vast majority.
