Regarding the HKSAR Government's announcement today (December 2)of the establishment of an independent committee chaired by a judge to comprehensively review the causes and spread of the catastrophic five-alarm fire in Tai Po, and to promote relevant institutional reforms; at the same time, the eighth Legislative Council election will proceed as scheduled to produce a new term of Legislative Council members, who will work in unison with the HKSAR Government to carry out post-disaster relief and reconstruction work, this Hong Kong Coalition expresses its support.
The devastating five-alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po caused significant casualties, and we are deeply saddened. President Xi has paid high attention to this, and the Central Government along with various sectors of mainland society have quickly extended assistance, for which we express our sincere gratitude. As of now, enterprises and caring individuals from Hong Kong, the mainland, and overseas have donated over HK$600 million in funds and materials, fully embodying the national sentiment and social warmth of "when one side faces difficulty, support comes from all directions."
In the face of this severe disaster, this Coalition expresses its deepest condolences to the unfortunate citizens who perished and the heroic firefighters who died in the line of duty, and extends sincere sympathies to all affected residents, the injured, and their families.
We firmly believe that, with the steadfast support of the Central Government, Hong Kong society will surely unite as one and overcome difficulties. We call on all citizens to actively participate in the election, jointly support the new Legislative Council in fulfilling its duties as soon as possible, and work together to promote post-disaster reconstruction and institutional improvements, allowing Hong Kong to emerge from the pain soon and move forward.
