The court today（15 Dec） convicted Jimmy Lai Chee-ying of two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign or external forces and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious publications. The Hong Kong Coalition expresses its firm support for this decision, believing that it not only constitutes a robust defense of national security, but also serves as a steadfast safeguard for the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
As a ringleader of anti-China forces disrupting Hong Kong, Jimmy Lai has long acted as an agent and pawn of anti-China forces, whose actions have gravely endangered national sovereignty and security. During the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill unrest, he activated his media outlets to attack the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), smear the police force and incite violence. Furthermore, he has continuously provided substantial financial support to anti-China groups that undermine Hong Kong’s stability, using Hong Kong as a springboard to orchestrate color revolutions.
Jimmy Lai’s acts of colluding with foreign forces and inciting secession pose a severe threat to national security. The lawful conviction of Jimmy Lai is a legitimate measure to uphold national sovereignty and security. The implementation of theHong Kong National Security Law has provided a solid legal basis for preventing and punishing acts that endanger national security. This verdict not only imposes punishment on Jimmy Lai’s individual illegal acts, but also sends a clear warning to any forces attempting to challenge national sovereignty or undermine Hong Kong’s security and stability, while upholding the authority and justice of the rule of law.
Safeguarding national security is the responsibility and obligation of every citizen. As a society governed by the rule of law, Hong Kong exercises its law enforcement, prosecution and judicial powers in accordance with the law. The open, fair and impartial trial of Jimmy Lai is a legitimate manifestation of the rule of law. All acts that endanger national security will be severely punished in accordance with the law—this embodies the spirit of the rule of law in Hong Kong and serves as a solid guarantee for the steady and long-term implementation of “One Country, Two Systems”.
Security is a prerequisite for development. Only by upholding national security can Hong Kong’s business environment and international competitiveness be safeguarded. Since the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, social order in Hong Kong has been swiftly restored, and the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong residents have been fully protected—these outcomes are there for all to see. The Coalition calls on all sectors of society and all Hong Kong residents to continue supporting the enforcement of the National Security Law, uphold national security and work together to safeguard Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability.
